What is the creative industry?
Our definition of 'creative' covers a broad range of sectors and activities, ranging from artists and musicians to architects, writers, furniture designers and multimedia companies and includes:
- Individuals and freelancers who are sole practitioners and generally have low-volume production - perhaps one piece or project at a time.
- Artisan-entrepreneurs and small to mid-sized businesses who are meeting a larger market demand, such as potters and photographers who produce multiple copies; high-end furniture manufacturers etc.
- Specialised service companies and freelancers that design, deliver, and produce creative content in various forms, including graphic designers, advertising firms, multimedia, architects and web designers. This group provides services and content to other businesses and private customers.
It also covers:
- Arts organisations operating across a diverse range of activities including music, theatre, dance, handicrafts, decorative art, embroidery, woodwork and all forms of visual art.
- Facilities and galleries featuring both works from travelling exhibits and local artists.
- Major events relevant to the creative industry.
- Professional organisations supporting or representing one or more sectors of the creative industry.
